Frank Dunne, 73, and his sister Margaret Heffernan, 74, run and control half of the €1.6bn Dublin-based Dunnes Stores chain of 155 shops. It has the second largest share, at 22%, of the republic’s grocery market. Further stakes are held by the children of their late sister Elizabeth, including Sharon McMahon, 46, who is a director of the family’s property firm, Silverwood Developments. Their brother Ben, 67, was bought out in the 1990s for more than €88m. He used some of this to develop a €9m expanding chain of 11 Ben Dunne Gyms. A fourth sibling, Anne Dunne, 72, was a one-fifth beneficiary of the trust that owned most of Dunnes Stores but plays no active role in it.
