Brian McCarthy and family
Financial services
Rank 2017

McCarthy, 72, handed over his 39% in Kerry-based Fexco to his five children – Susan, Denis, Ruth, Elizabeth and John – in 2015. He founded the global financial services operation in 1981 when he was an assistant bank manager with AIB in Killorglin and saw an opening for a foreign exchange bureau with long opening hours. From a single office, it now has operations in 29 countries, employing 2,000 people. With Denis as chief executive, it also owns Goodbody Stockbrokers. Its parent, Group Holdings (Fexco) showed net assets of €322m in 2016, and we value it conservatively at €441m. It is now owned by a British Virgin Island company. McCarthy made more than €18m from previous share sales and salary and retains interests in other parts of its operation.
