The fourth-generation family business W&R Barnett started as a grain merchant and is now a trading conglomerate whose interests also include animal feed, packaging, laboratory testing and molasses. Its €84m purchase of United Molasses from Tate & Lyle in 2010 turned it into a global operation. It also owns the Fair Winter Farm stud in Buckinghamshire. Founded in 1896, the Belfast-based group is led by chairman Barnett, 72. Its profits came in at €35m on €959m sales in 2014-15. With more than €247m net assets, it is worth €294m. Barnett, his family and their trusts have a stake worth €235.2m.
